HCD Portfolio Project: Human-Centered Design Capstone

HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN CAPSTONE PROJECT

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This human-centered design capstone project guides students through a comprehensive design process to address real-world needs, with a focus on assistive technology and community-based solutions. Using both the EMPATHY-CENTERED DESIGN student workbook and Teaching Human-Centered Design educator handbook as core resources, students will document their journey from problem identification to solution implementation while creating professional artifacts to showcase their work.

Partnership Elements Description Documentation Methods
Community Partner Information about the organization or individual being served Interview recordings, partnership agreements, contact logs
Need Statement Clear articulation of the identified need or challenge Problem statements, context documentation, initial observations
Stakeholder Analysis Identification of all parties affected by the problem and solution Stakeholder maps, influence diagrams, interview summaries

Learning Objectives

  • Apply human-centered design methodology to address authentic community needs
  • Develop comprehensive documentation across all design phases using physical workbooks and digital portfolios
  • Create professional-quality artifacts (presentations, videos, posters) that communicate the design journey
  • Demonstrate transferable skills in problem framing, critical thinking, communication, and AI collaboration
